endangered giant
countless stars sing out your name
mournful sturgeon moon
the lake sturgeon,
a "living fossil" belonging to a family of fish
that has existed for more than 135 million years.
now all but extinct-
it thrived in abundance from canada to alabama.
its presence and import so great-
the august full moon carries its name.
today, the lake sturgeon has become one of the rarest fish in north america
due to intense over fishing in the 19 century,
pollution and damage to their habitat and breeding grounds
due to agriculture and lumbering.
with the current administration's gutting of the
Endangered Species Act
new regulations take a wreaking ball to successful protections.
profit over future will
"consider economic factors before categorizing a species
as endangered or threatened."
in another change- species categorized as "threatened" will
no longer receive the same protections as species in the "endangered category."
their fate will now be decided on a case-by-case basis.
profit over protection.
someday full moons once named
for that months greatest attributes
will be long forgotten memories.
"it is still not too late to act. it will take far-reaching vision, it will
take courage, it will take fierce determination
to act now,
to lay the foundations
where we may not know all the details
about how to shape the ceiling.
in other words,
it will take cathedral thinking.
i ask you to please wake up
and make changes required possible."
be the good you want to
see in the world

We haven't treated Mother Earth well, and the mistreatment is coming back to haunt us.

I can hear the stars singing, and the mournful sturgeon moon. Can anyone else? Does anyone care? Certainly those in power do not!

Walking with the Sturgeon Moon... all of this earth in my heart... I listen for the path that leads us back to the heart of all our connections. Thank you, Rebecca and my dear haiku circle. XO

It's sad. But, even complaints and letter writing and protesting, etc. would not over power the "power" that is in office now. The decision maker's child and his child's children will see the results of these terrible, thoughtless decisions.

It's so sad what we, humans, did to the earth... heath, fires, overfloats and climate change all around to tell/show us to do better and still we won't listen... I hope more and more of us will do in the near future and that it is not too late...
