The practice of Visual Journaling cultivates insight into the nature of the creative process and its multiple meanings. Enriched by self trust and acceptance, paper, paint, words, pen, and line entwine to make expressive complex intimate books. It's all about one's willingness to be vulnerable and raw for the sake of true freedom. Experiencing deep, honest, personal journeys and true connection to a world outside of us takes precedence over producing beautiful ‘pictures’. Ultimately, Visual Journaling is about depicting the fluidity of life, about effortlessly carrying one's self from one place to another and immersing one’s self right in the middle of humanity, vibrantly, passionately, and compassionately.
Bring with you an old passport that belonged to you or someone else, to an old family member, or to a complete stranger. You will turn it into a voluminous exciting journal, rich with your colors and textures, and packed with personal imagery. Trek through your intimate stories and make room on your pages for new ones. Honor its bearer’s life whether you know/knew that person or not. Be inspired by its stories and histories. Strip it from its formality by adding your own biographical anecdotes. Allow for playfulness and for the interplay between the concealing and revealing of visual and emotional information. Permit a spontaneous and sensorial celebration.
With the help of gentle and fresh multiple prompts we’ll satisfy our undeniable wish to explore our past paths and witness our constant onward movement, to discover and expand through a tactile, sensorial, and honest creative gestures. Our days together will end with rich voluminous personal journals filled with awe and wonderment, warm nests of gatherings to be cradled in the palm of our hands and then surrendered temporarily to become part of a collective altar, a one of a kind ‘Offering’ to each other, a sanctuary, a place of safety and comfort, a testament to our deep need to gather and connect to a world larger than our own.
I truly believe that the need to be witnessed by the self and by others is a human-core-need to be fulfilled by the act of creating. Therefore, a compelling part of my journey is the teaching of art making and visual journaling. As a young adult in Israel, I had studied Fine Arts in an artists' village nestled at the foot of Mount Carmel overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, and later, in the Netherlands, Graphic Design at the University of Arts in the contemporary yet history-drenched city of Utrecht. Now living by the beach of Southern California with my family, I take in all the magnificence of the landscapes that shaped me and of the visual languages I have acquired along the way. I keep an online visual journal titled One Artist Journal that is derived from my actual physical journal pages. It is now available in a published book form, carrying the same title. After One Artist Journal came 14 Artist Journals, my second book, depicting the journaling worlds of 14 magnificent individuals. After 14 Artist Journals came my third, titled IN MY BONES: A Visual Journal, continuing where One Artist Journal left off. I am very passionate about finding meaning and connection through the process of visual journaling.
