Dresses

Dresses announcement

Dresses. Again and always.
Containers of free spiritedness.
Expressions of abundant figure and shape.
Reflections of true voice.
Samples of animated exuberance.
Projections of earned self-possession.
Witnesses of joy, light, and lightness.
Testaments of mood and humor.
Musings of unabashed sensuality.
Symbols of self love and ownership.
Patterns of tangible and robust rhythm.
Evidence of ever-changing life dances
and brave tactile movements.

In this 4 day workshop we will explore the ever changing relationship we have to dresses.
We will create them, leave them be, or incorporate them into our favorite substrate.

Practices of mixed media art making cultivate insight into the nature of the creative process and its multiple relations to emotional stories of loss and mend. Enriched by self trust and acceptance, images, photos, paper, paint, words, pen, line, thread, and many unconventional tools and materials entwine to make expressive, complex and extremely personal creations. It's all about one's willingness to reveal vulnerability and rawness for the sake of true creative freedom, newness, and a deep sense of interconnectedness to all. Experiencing honest and joyous journeys takes precedence over producing beautiful outcomes. Ultimately, this process is about depicting the fluidity of life, about effortlessly carrying one's self from one place to another and about connecting to a larger world than our own.

Diving Into The Blues

Diving Into the Blues

Stephanie Hilvitz
Sue Hagedorn

Blue evokes a calm sense of tranquility, inspiring the creative and
intuitive mind. It is the color of the throat chakra which governs
communication and expression.

Indigo dyeing requires exposure to air, cyanotype requires exposure to
light, both hold an elemental, deeply felt quality of healing and well
being embedded in the color blue.

Cyanotype

Diving into the Blues

holds a space for healing and connection,
strengthening an artistic path both individually and communally;
seamlessly moving from one to the other.  Our explorations in the alchemy of light and water,
embellished and strengthened though individual handwork
will tie us to what was, what is and what will come to be.

During this 4 day workshop Stephanie and Sue will share bundle dyeing
techniques with flowers, leaves and rust to create the base on which to
explore shibori resist with indigo and a unique cyanotype process.

An alchemy beyond botanicals-  transferring to fabric and paper.  One
that evokes magic and mystic sciences on which to create a soft, rich
substrate to stitch your own artful story cloth.

Sue and Stephanie met 15 years ago, after Sue moved from Anchorage, Alaska
to Longmont, Colorado, and joined a book club that Stephanie was a part of, both
worked in a community garden group and found common ground in the art of
community.  They share a love of textiles, vintage linens, handwork of all
kinds, both as an expression of art and of healing.

Stephanie and Sue began combining their artistic passions of both traditional and
contemporary textile explorations-
and from these rich collaborations a series of workshops were born.
Their intention is to enliven new ways of combining natural dyes, eco printing and indigo
surface design on cloth and paper encouraging your personal style and ultimately
encouraging and forging your own artful story cloth.

Sue is a writer and poet, has explored many types of art with the last decade
focused on the alchemy and magic of indigo and shibori.
Stephanie's  art practice began more than 45 years ago; over the years she has
made textile art, beadwork, mixed media work and in the past several years
returned full circle back to fiber.

An Arboreal Journal with Orly Avineri

Announcement

An Arboreal Journal
Nov. 11-16, 2021

and

a second offering
Nov. 7-11, 2021

details at the bottom of this post

An Arboreal Journal is about being like a child, wandering among trees,
gathering found elements, then coming inside to make sense of them all.
This time elements that relate to trees specifically, and the soil from which they originate.
It’s about expressing ourselves with things that are already there,
about paying close attention to the place that gifts us-
the pined mountains of Prescott, Arizona.

Usually we would start with a book/journal and bring our visual stories from the outside in.
This time we’ll create outside of the journal, with papers, paint, and pen work.
We will soak cloth and paper bundles in dye baths infused with various materials like rust, spices, and herbs.
We will make our marks with nature-made tools and extract pigments from soil, rocks, charcoal, and arboreal elements.
Then we’ll put all our creations together into a book/journal of our own making.

With the help of gentle and fresh multiple prompts we’ll satisfy our deep need to be
and become more independent, brave, free, and connect to trees, land, and to each other.
We will grant our undeniable wish to explore our worlds and witness our constant onward movement,
to discover and expand through tactile, sensorial, and honest creative gestures.
Our days together will end with rich voluminous personal journals/books filled with awe and wonderment,
warm nests of gatherings to be cradled in the palm of our hands.
It will be a place of safety and comfort, a testament to our longing to be self-reliant
while at the same time admitting our reliance on others,
to gather and connect to a world larger than our own.

This year we invite you to the peaceful mountains of Prescott, Arizona
where our visual stories will be
nurtured and inspired by the unique natural elements of the southwest.

Orly will be our guide-
as nature ignites our senses transforming our art work through
natural dye baths, earth pigments, nature's mark makers-
to inform and infuse our creative outpourings.
In the warm hold of nature, we will welcome a return to our very roots
 as hunters and gatherers,
allowing the weight of the world to fall from our shoulders
and simply awaken the primal creator in each of us.

Passport to Journal

Announcement

The practice of Visual Journaling cultivates insight into the nature of the creative process and its multiple meanings. Enriched by self trust and acceptance, paper, paint, words, pen, and line entwine to make expressive complex intimate books. It's all about one's willingness to be vulnerable and raw for the sake of true freedom. Experiencing deep, honest, personal journeys and true connection to a world outside of us takes precedence over producing beautiful ‘pictures’. Ultimately, Visual Journaling is about depicting the fluidity of life, about effortlessly carrying one's self from one place to another and immersing one’s self right in the middle of humanity, vibrantly, passionately, and compassionately.

Bring with you an old passport that belonged to you or someone else, to an old family member, or to a complete stranger. You will turn it into a voluminous exciting journal, rich with your colors and textures, and packed with personal imagery. Trek through your intimate stories and make room on your pages for new ones. Honor its bearer’s life whether you know/knew that person or not. Be inspired by its stories and histories. Strip it from its formality by adding your own biographical anecdotes. Allow for playfulness and for the interplay between the concealing and revealing of visual and emotional information. Permit a spontaneous and sensorial celebration.

With the help of gentle and fresh multiple prompts we’ll satisfy our undeniable wish to explore our past paths and witness our constant onward movement, to discover and expand through a tactile, sensorial, and honest creative gestures. Our days together will end with rich voluminous personal journals filled with awe and wonderment, warm nests of gatherings to be cradled in the palm of our hands and then surrendered temporarily to become part of a collective altar, a one of a kind ‘Offering’ to each other, a sanctuary, a place of safety and comfort, a testament to our deep need to gather and connect to a world larger than our own.

I truly believe that the need to be witnessed by the self and by others is a human-core-need to be fulfilled by the act of creating. Therefore, a compelling part of my journey is the teaching of art making and visual journaling. As a young adult in Israel, I had studied Fine Arts in an artists' village nestled at the foot of Mount Carmel overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, and later, in the Netherlands, Graphic Design at the University of Arts in the contemporary yet history-drenched city of Utrecht. Now living by the beach of Southern California with my family, I take in all the magnificence of the landscapes that shaped me and of the visual languages I have acquired along the way. I keep an online visual journal titled One Artist Journal that is derived from my actual physical journal pages. It is now available in a published book form, carrying the same title. After One Artist Journal came 14 Artist Journals, my second book, depicting the journaling worlds of 14 magnificent individuals. After 14 Artist Journals came my third, titled IN MY BONES: A Visual Journal, continuing where One Artist Journal left off. I am very passionate about finding meaning and connection through the process of visual journaling.

The Feast of San Michael is celebrated on the 29th of September. San Michael is one of the principal Archangels, protector against the dark of the night. As we move into the edge of winter - the celebration of Michaelmas is associated with encouraging protection during the dark months ahead. San Miguel's combat with evil is acted out each year in front of the Parroquia in a grand fireworks battle that lights up the dark of night; when, just before sunrise, the victory of good over evil is won once more and everyone stops to sing out their thanks as peace reigns over this beautiful town once more.

i began traveling through the interior, indigenous and richly traditional areas of mexico at the early age of sixteen.

my love and admiration grows with each return.

mexico permanently resides in my heart and my greatest joy is filling yours

with the warmth and charm that is always waiting there.

i collect "souls" that fit together in a rich tapestry of shared appreciation

for diverse cultures, folk art, traditional celebrations, charm and verve.

Closest to my heart is the chance to open doors to off the beaten path

age old treasures and best kept secrets of San Miguel and beyond.

While we will enjoy many not to be missed favorites in the town,

we will also leave the cobblestones behind to scour the back roads

into the ancient heartbeat of this intriguing culture.

It is my pleasure to introduce you to the rich traditional and contemporary,

the timeless and ephemeral as we experience Mexico

behind the veil,

as only an old friend can.

i hope this will be your year to come away with me!

con abrazos,

 rebecca
